Sand Hollow State Park: a local guide from Hurricane

Sand Hollow is the warm-water playground near our Hurricane home: a 1,322-acre reservoir ringed by red sandstone, with beaches, paddleboarding and boating, plus about 15,000 acres of dunes on Sand Mountain for off-road riding.

The main entrance is about 15 minutes from Hurricane Oasis.

What to do there

Beaches and swimming

Sandy beaches along the reservoir. Utah law requires children under 13 to wear a life jacket on any boat, kayak or paddleboard that is underway.

Paddleboards, kayaks and boats

The park's concessionaire, Sand Hollow Rentals, rents kayaks and paddleboards, plus ATVs and UTVs, at the south end of the park.

Sand Mountain dunes

Dune and rock-crawling routes on the south and east sides of the reservoir. Riders from outside Utah may need a Utah non-resident OHV permit.

Cliff jumping

Popular, and risky. The park says jumping is at your own risk, recommends life jackets and helmets, and bans glass on the jumping rocks.

Before you swim

Check for algae advisories

Utah's Department of Environmental Quality monitors the reservoir. Harmful algae mats show up in some summers and can be deadly for dogs, so check the advisory page before you go.

Bring your own shade

There is little natural shade on the beaches. Bring a canopy or umbrella, sunscreen and more water than you think you need.

Watch the event calendar

Big off-road events, like the UTV Takeover in October, close parts of the park for a few days.

Quail Creek as a backup

Quail Creek State Park, about 20 minutes away, is a smaller 600-acre reservoir known for some of the warmest water in Utah.
